Now, start at the point in the future when you have reached your goal, and work backwards. What did you do just before you reached the goal that caused you to achieve that goal? Write that down. What did you do just before that, and before that? Write it down too. Work backwards from your goal to your current circumstance detailing each step you would have taken before you moved another step closer to your goal. When you finish this exercise, you'll end up with an effective road map that will help to lead you to your goal.

5. Allow some flexibility for unexpected circumstances

Once you have set your goals and implemented your action plan for achieving your goal, you will likely find that you need to make adjustments along the path to your goal. By all means, allow yourself the flexibility to alter your strategies for reaching your goal if you find a better way. That's good problem solving.

However, be honest with yourself if you're changing your original plan. Are you making a change because the new strategy is truly better, or are you not following through on your original plan because it's challenging and you're looking for an easier way out? If that's the case, revisit your reasons for wanting to achieve the goal in the first place. Do you still want to achieve that goal? Do you want to achieve the goal enough that you're willing to continue to commit to the hard work?

Be flexible with your plan, but be skeptical of your motivations any time you make a significant change in the plan.

By writing down your goal, you are telling your brain that it should work upon what you have put there.

Writing also needs rewriting. Every once in awhile, there could be circumstances that would change what you have originally written. Even if the situation remains the same, it is necessary to review and to rewrite what you have written. Reiterating to the brain that you want something makes it actively work upon the idea.

Perhaps, it is best to consider that goal setting is not focused on careers alone. You could set your mind into something more, like attitude improvement, making a relationship work after almost giving up, giving something back to your community, or even dieting. All of these require discipline and an unending commitment.

Another important thing to remember when preparing to attain the set goals is to have an achievable timeline. For example, dieting usually takes awhile before results can be seen. So what would make dieting realizable for you? Maybe you could begin with ¾ the amount of what you usually eat on the first week. Eventually, you could decide to cut down your food consumption into half. Then it would be easier to take out the unhealthy food that you eat such as those that have fats and you could begin to cut down on your carbs as well.

Now you have the first three rules: knowing what you want, writing and rewriting, and setting a realizable timeline, it is now time to go to the fourth rule tell your goal to everyone. Although you maybe tempted to just keep your personal goals to yourself (you might argue that after all, they are personal), do not. Telling your friends and relatives that you have a certain goal makes you work harder to achieve it. And they can help you.

If you are really dead serious about a certain goal, perhaps a little meditation could also help. Many a great civilization in the past has turned to this practice to make them think more deeply. A quiet moment every now and then would greatly help in clearing away thought cobwebs. Sometimes what deters you from reaching your purpose is a distraction. Any type of distraction could be taken off your mind through quiet pondering.

Executive and management coaching has increased in popularity in the business world, with many prestigious companies implementing coaching programs for their executives, managers, and employees. Since high performance is essential to the maintenance of a successful career, companies who want to maximize the investment they make in people are choosing to engage in performance coaching.

How Do Managers Start Coaching?

Due to the success of executive coaching, many managers are now coaching employees for Performance Improvement (PI). Coaching can also be a very effective tool for motivation, participation, and leadership development. So, how can you use coaching for PI, staff development, and ultimate organizational success?

Know Your Role:

When engaging in coaching employees it is important to understand and clarify your role. Although there are many similarities, a boss, a coach, and a boss coaching employees have different roles:

The Boss = Sponsor-Mandates goals and holds others accountable for results (internal to organization)

The Coach = Change Agent-Helps people increase their skills to achieve the results (typically external to organization).

The Boss-Coach = Both Mandates the goals and acts as change agent to help people develop the ability to accomplish these goals (internal to organization)

Beware some of the common pitfalls of the dual Boss-Coach role such as:

Not making expectations clear

Two Important Tasks When Coaching:

Clear expectations should be behaviorally specific i.e. what, by whom, when.

Task 2: Coach and develop employees to accomplish expectations. Once you have clarified expectations offer coaching as a way to accomplish these expectations. Offering coaching as an option puts the employee's motivation where it belongs, with her.

Steps to Coaching Employees for Success:

Once an employee commits to coaching the boss-coach engages in the following steps:

1. Contracting.

3. Live-Action Coaching

4. Debriefing-Evaluation of coaching process

Step I-Contracting:

Partner with the coachee, familiarize yourself with her challenges, test coachee's ability to own her part of the issue and start giving immediate feedback. Establish a contract that outlines specific content, duration of coaching, sequence of meetings, goals, and how they will be measured. Specify expectations of both parties i.e. reporting hierarchies.

Step II-Action Planning:

During this phase move the coachee to specifics. Help her identify her side of the pattern and steps that she needs to take to improve her performance. Once a contract has been established plan specifically how it will be executed. With the employee, create specific action items with due dates.

Step III- Coaching Sessions:

Meet with the coachee on a regular basis (once a week is recommended) to ensure that the plan is being followed and to help keep the employee on track. I recommend Live-Action Coaching*, which allows you to observe a coachee in live action with her colleagues and provide immediate feedback.

As a manager you possess a unique advantage because you are already internal and in a position to observe. Live action coaching may also entail giving an employee feedback on an interaction you are having with them. Assume that how they interact with you carries over to other working relationships so who better to give them feedback than someone who is being affected by his or her behavior.

When engaging in Live-Action coaching ensure the structure of the sessions, follow the coachee's goals, foster pattern breaking, and maintain alignment in the organizational system-by honoring the coachee's and your role in the system.

Step IV-Debriefing:

After the agreed upon coaching contract has been fulfilled you must debrief with your employee regarding the process of coaching. Assess whether or not coaching was effective, were her goals met? Discuss the coachee's strengths and challenges. Identify key recurring patterns, assess the alignment of roles, and plan the coachee's next steps. There are few terms that appropriate describe the passion that you have to succeed. If you don't devote your life to this higher calling it is doubtful that you will make much success out of it. Succeeding in business is much more than simply putting a name on a business card and passing it out to your friends. It is about making a solumn vow to see success.

Succeeding is about having the motivation to get up each morning and move closer to your goals. No matter if you are tired, frustrated or poor you have the passion to keep working day in and day out to achieve success. You don't get distracted by all of life's useless pursuits. You know what you want and you will achieve it; even if it kills you. Nothing could slow you down or take you away from your pursuits.

Donald Trump said, "Money was never a big motivation for me, except as a way to keep score. The real excitement is playing the game." You love the up's and down's of playing the game of getting ahead in life. You desire to succeed and compete against the brightest of minds. Motivation is more than talking about what you are going to do it is about getting done what you said you were going to do. Less talk and more work is motivation. When a person really becomes successful in his life, earning money no more remains as his priority. A person, who already earned millions in his lifetime, not once but repeatedly for so many times, may not give any importance to the money. Money just becomes like a piece of another paper in the eye of that person. And thats the whole truth. Even if we see money, its nothing more than a piece of paper used to exchange the goods or articles. But if we actually see it, might be the quality-cost-price of my visiting card must be more than the value of a USD 1000 note. And thats a fact!

But still you see the power which a thousand USD note holds, might purchase me those kinda may be a 100,000 of such visiting cards!

Now have you ever imagined that the same note of USD 1000, could feed 10,000 Hungry childerens who have even no access to something like a 'breakfast' or sometimes 'dinner'. Now the same piece of paper actually holds the highest value in that community! And a person, belonging to such community may be very lucky, if he somehow earns even $1000 in a year!

So, the conclusion is, Even the day you become a millionaire, dont forget that your million dollars are mere pieces of papers unless they are used to wipe off the tears of a hungry ones. Always remember, your consumers who are feeding you, are equally eligible to make money. So, never waste your time in doing nothing after earning a big lot. You should be in a position to give it away to as many people as you see.
